Raymond C. Read, MD, PhD, was brought up 10 miles from the center of London. His home was bombed during World War II, but he went on to become a scholar at Cambridge University. After obtaining First Class honors in Natural Sciences I and II and with a Rockefeller Foundation studentship, he received his MD degree at the University of Minnesota. After serving a Harvey Cushing fellowship at Harvard University (at the Brigham and Women's Hospital), he completed his residency in general and thoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota, an Associate Professor at Wayne State University, and Professor of Surgery at the University of Arkansas for 35 years.
