Article Outline

One of the most beguiling and difficult problems for surgeons is the patient with postoperative ileus. In this issue of Current Problems in Surgery, Dr. Benjamin Person and Dr. Steven Wexner of the Cleveland Clinic in Florida write an authoritative and highly informative monograph on “The Management of Postoperative Ileus.” They begin with a discussion of the physiology and pathophysiology of gastrointestinal motility and devote the second half of the monograph to the treatment of patients with postoperative ileus. This is a very valuable treatise, which is well written and highly informative for surgeons at all levels of training and practice.
