Foreword

Article Outline

The rapid increase in the incidence of malignant melanoma worldwide is primarily due to solar trauma, although other environmental and genetic factors are important etiological factors. One of the most challenging problems for the surgeon is the management of the patient with melanoma of the head and neck. In this issue of Current Problems in Surgery, Dr. Schmalbach of the Wilford Hall Medical Center, and Drs. Johnson and Bradford of the University of Michigan have written an excellent monograph on “The Management of Head and Neck Melanoma.” Their monograph primarily addresses head and neck melanoma but also reviews the regional and systemic therapies available for patients with advanced disease. This monograph will be an informative resource for dermatologists and oncologists in all fields of medicine.
