Article Outline

In this issue of Current Problems in Surgery, Dr. Joseph Caprini, at the Northwestern Evanston Hospital, has assembled an accomplished group of international co-authors, in writing an outstanding monograph on “Venous Thromboembolism and Cancer.” This condition is very common, and by no means confined to patients with malignant disease. The authors begin with a section on general aspects of thromboprophylaxis, and then devote the remainder of the text to cancer-associated thrombosis, prevention of thromboembolism in the cancer patient, treatment of thromboembolism in the cancer patient, and the pathophysiology of thrombosis and inflammation and its role in the cancer patient. This monograph is highly informative, and has applicability to patients with a broad range of diseases. It will be useful to students of medicine at all levels of clinical experience and in all areas of specialization.
