Article Outline

In this issue of Current Problems in Surgery Drs. George Velmahos and Hasan Alam of the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital address a topic of interest to surgeons in all specialties: Advances in Critical Care. Over the last two decades surgeons placed increasing emphasis on critical care, as evidenced by the American Board of Surgery's designation of critical care as an essential content area of general surgery and its offering of a Certificate in Surgical Critical Care. In recognizing the importance of continuity of care, the surgeon must assume responsibility for their patients from the time of admission to hospital discharge. This excellent monograph is current and provides a broad overview of an essential aspect of surgical education, clinical practice, and research.
