Article Outline

On April 29, 1955, Dr. Robert M. Zollinger and Dr. Edwin H. Ellison presented before the American Surgical Association a paper titled, “Primary Peptic Ulcerations of the Jejunum Associated with Alpha-Cell Tumors of the Pancreas.” Since that time we have learned a great deal about this fascinating clinical entity, including its pathogenesis and molecular genetic basis, including the relationship to multiple endocrine neoplasia type I. Also, an entire branch of medical therapy has evolved as we learned the cause of the peptic ulceration. In this issue of Current Problems in Surgery, Dr. Christopher Ellison, the son of Edward H. Ellison and the Robert M. Zollinger Professor, and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Ohio State University Medical Center, and his colleague, Dr. Jerome A. Johnson, have written an authoritative monograph on the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This is a classic contribution and for years will serve as the sole source reference for students interested in this fascinating endocrine disorder.
